SAILING CLOSE TO THE WIND
'Sailing Close To The Wind' is a capsule which centers around naval traditions and the associated dress. Shot in the boathouse of the Royal Nautical Club of Barcelona, I wanted to portray two women awaiting the return of a ship by the port. Women were historically forbidden from sailing on military vessels or merchant ships because captains believed their presence would anger the sea gods, who would cause rough waves and violent weather. Using the traditional navy and white of naval uniforms, I reworked a linen body suit I had made a year prior, into a top and matching shorts. The second look featured a deconstructed linen shirt with silk sleeves and a trompe-l’œil semi detached collar.
